  GARMATTM FOR SOIL SLOPE PROTECTIONS  
 
The common problem seen in the newly formed slopes is erosion. Man made and natural slopes are subject to erosion due to wind and water. This has been the problem being faced by construction engineers from time immemorial. The factors favouring erosion are soil, which are cohesion-less and lose in nature; the absence of binding force or loss of shear strength due to saturation. But the extent of erosion is a function of Several factors.

The ground surface requires grass / vegetation cover to protect the soil from erosion. In the absence of vegetation some other means should be adopted to act as a cover and protect the surface against erosion. Dense vegetation growth is a natural and one of the best-proven methods for erosion control. However due to certain conditions, it is found that it is not possible to have a vegetation growth with a high root density as required, leading to the search for other options.

The main factor influencing erosion is the root density. The roots naturally hold the soil together. Initially erosion and local failure of slopes occur which finally leads to removal of topsoil.

The remedial solution is vegetation growth. But the efficacy of the system incorporating the vegetation growth has to be superior to natural turfing. In other words, the root density has to increase from normal 1500 Kg/ha to 4500 Kg/ha to effectively reinforce the soil surface. This is possible by micro-reinforced vegetation system using Geomat (Mulchmat).

The netting provided on top and bottom of the mulch mat acts as a reinforcing material for the roots of the grass. The roots of the turf get entwined with the netting, which enhances further the growth of the vegetation. It has been found that the root density increases from 1500 Kg/Ha to 4500 Kg/Ha by using the micro reinforced vegetation, which effectively reinforce the soil surface. The micro reinforced vegetation enhances the shear strength even under saturated condition by root fiber reinforcement of soil.

In some cases a combination of products can be used to stabilize the slope it can be a Rope net, an Anco Drain and a Geomat.
