ROCKFALL PROTECTION

In the mountains & cuttings land slides and rock fall occur frequently in the monsoon seasons and are a serious threat to the lives of people & property constructed in & around the cuttings.

Geological and atmospheric conditions, like soil type, rock nature, steepness of mountains (slope), heavy rains and freezing and thawing due to sharp changes of temperature etc. are favorable conditions of landslides and rock fall.

These landslides and rockfall causes accidents due to falling of boulders on plying vehicles or due to vehicles hitting these boulders or landslide debris. In the mountainous terrains & rock cuttings the frequent Rockfall are threatening the smooth flow of traffic resulting in loss of time and money. The frequency of landslides and rock fall increases in the monsoon seasons.

Rockfall can demolish structures and cause harm to people. Rocks falling on highways may strike vehicles, block traffic, cause accidents, and sometimes damage the roads and rail traffic. Minor but costly consequences are the work of clearing highways and borrow ditches in rockfall areas. Any structure in the path of a large rockfall is subject to damage or destruction.

Garware-Wall ropes ltd has developed the Steel Wire Boulder nets. Boulder nets made of high strength steel ropes are the ideal solution for rockfall protection. They can be installed for the height ranging from 10 m to 60 m. and can be fabricated so as to suit the site conditions. Boulder net can be made depending upon the extent of fracture of the rock, height of cutting to suit the site requirements.
The Garware Boulder nets are made up of galvanized steel wire to resist the effect of corrosion for a long period and has a long design life. Many accidents are prevented by the use of Steel wire Boulder nets thus saving the loss of life and property. The small rockfall are also trouble some as they cause stoppage of the traffic on roads and rail tracks.
The Garware Steel Wire Boulder nets trap the falling boulders thus preventing the accidents due to these falling boulders as well as facilitating the smooth flow of traffic in mountainous terrain.

Installation Procedure
The installation procedure involves the following steps
Preparation of the slope surface – removal of loose boulders and dressing of slope surface as required.
Ropenets are anchored at the top of the cutting so as to take the designed strength of the ropenet.
After the top anchoring of the ropenets the adjacent nets are laced so as to form a continuous net.
Once the adjacent nets are laced together the continuous nets are rolled from the top to the bottom of the cutting so as to cover the cutting.
The nets are anchored on the cutting slope using anchor bolts/ fasteners. Intermediate anchoring is required so that the nets take the shape of the cutting profile & hug the rock surface.
The ropenets are anchored at the bottom using HYSD bolts of desired length
